Gold Vermeil vs Sterling Silver: Which Everyday Jewellery Should You Choose?

Short answer: choose gold vermeil if you love a warm golden tone and want an 18ct gold finish at a demi-fine price, and choose solid 925 sterling silver for pieces that take daily knocks, because there is no plating to wear away. Below we explain what each material is, how it wears and how to look after it.

Gold vermeil vs sterling silver at a glance

Material What it is Best for Care
18ct gold vermeil 2.5 micron layer of 18ct gold over 925 sterling silver Necklaces, earrings, fine stacking rings Keep dry, wipe with a soft cloth, no dips
Solid 925 sterling silver 92.5% silver alloy, no plating Signet rings, cuffs, everyday hoops Polish with a silver cloth when it darkens

What is the difference between gold vermeil and gold plating?

Both put a layer of gold over another metal, but gold vermeil uses a thicker layer over solid sterling silver. Our vermeil is a 2.5 micron layer of 18ct yellow gold over 925 sterling silver; standard plating is often much thinner and is usually applied over brass. A thicker layer on a precious-metal base lasts longer with good care.

Is gold vermeil the same as solid gold?

No. Solid gold is gold alloy all the way through; gold vermeil is sterling silver with a gold layer on the surface. Vermeil gives the warm look of gold at a lower price, and with everyday wear the gold layer can soften gradually, most quickly on rings and bracelets.

Should I choose gold vermeil or sterling silver?

Choose the tone you enjoy wearing and the metal you already own, so pieces layer easily. Solid sterling silver has no plating to wear away and can always be polished back to a shine. Gold vermeil suits warm, golden styling and works well for necklaces and earrings, which rub less than rings.

Will sterling silver tarnish?

Yes, sterling silver naturally darkens over time when it meets air and moisture. Regular wear, storage in a pouch and a quick rub with a silver polishing cloth keep it bright.

How do I make demi-fine jewellery last?

Put jewellery on last and take it off first: after perfume, lotion and hairspray, and before swimming, showering, exercise or sleep. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth after wearing and store each piece separately. Never use silver dips or abrasive polishes on gold vermeil.
